The field is complete for the belairdirect men’s event

The field is now complete for the 2018 belairdirect BC Men’s Curling Championship, presented by Berwick Retirement Homes.

A total of 12 men’s teams have now qualified for the championship, taking place at Parksville Curling Club from Jan. 31-Feb. 4. The winner of the Parksville event will go on to compete at the 2018 Tim Hortons Brier in Regina from Mar. 3-11.

The final four berths were decided at Abbotsford Curling Club over the weekend, the last of four open playdown events in the lead-up to the championship.
The A Event qualifier was Team Longworth, from Vernon, featuring skip Mark Longworth, third Michael Longworth, second Rob Norborg, lead John Slattery, and alternate Aron Herrick.

The B Event winner was Team Jackson, from Victoria, featuring skip Glen Jackson, third Andrew Komlodi, second Corey Chester and lead Joel Cave.

The C Event qualified two teams, Penticton’s Team Eden and Golden Ears Winter Club’s Team Dezura. Team Eden features skip Wylie Eden, third Sean Matheson, second Jason Larence and lead Tyler Jaeger. Team Dezura features skip Grant Dezura, third Brendan Willis, second Brian Kedziora and lead Mitch Young.

The newly qualified teams will compete against teams that qualified in November and December – as well as the defending champions, Team Cotter of Vernon.
In the Kootenay playdowns in December, Team Medford took the single berth that was available. Team Medford from Cranbrook Curling Centre features skip Chris Medford, third Steve Tersmette, second Josh Firman and lead Jeff Langin. The Victoria Curling Club rinks of Team Montgomery (Jason Montgomery, Cameron de Jong, Miles Craig and Will Duggan) and Team Craig (Wes Craig, Gerald Poelman, Tony Anslow, Victor Gamble) secured berths at the Island open playdowns in December. Team Pierce, from Royal City Curling Club, and the Okanagan rink of Chris Baier (third Adam Cseke, second Matt Tolley and lead Cal Jackson) qualified in the Vernon playdowns.

Team Geall, from Kelowna Curling Club, and Team Joanisse, from Golden Ears Winter Club in Maple Ridge, qualified at the end of November because they were the top-ranked BC men’s teams on the CTRS list. Team Geall features skip Sean Geall, third Jeff Richard, second Andrew Nerpin and lead David Harper. Team Joanisse features skip Dean Joanisse, third Paul Cseke, second Jay Wakefield and lead John Cullen.

The defending champions, Team Cotter, will also be at the event, with three of the four curlers who won last year. The team will be made up of Jim Cotter (Vernon), Catlin Schneider (Saskatchewan), Tyrel Griffith and Rick Sawatsky (Kelowna).
